A new Vons store serving the Mission Hills and Hillcrest areas of San Diego is due to open this coming week. Vons has existed at 515 W Washington St for several decades, but many who are familiar with the area will recall that the previous location seemed small and in need of an update.
Almost a year ago, it was announced the old 12,000 square foot building would be torn down to make room for a completely new structure. During the construction process, some neighborhood residents were concerned that the new store was becoming far too large for the area. Now that most of the tarps and scaffolding have been removed and the final touches are being done, the building, while decidedly large, comes off as a welcome modernization.
The new building’s exterior has a contemporary look mixing different materials such as stucco, metal, glass, wood, and brick. Along the sidewalks, they have done some nice landscaping which is much more appealing to the eye than the previous look.
Bordered by Washington St, University Dove St, and University Ave, the old building took up only a fraction of the entire lot, leaving parking spots surrounding the perimeter.
The new building takes up almost the entire lot, which may have been the initial cause for concern by residents, but smartly, garage parking was included in the plans creating multiple access points from the different streets.
According to a press release, the new store is close to 58,000 square feet. Included inside, will be a cafe, a Starbucks, a pharmacy, as well as expanded grocery departments.
Signage on the building is stating the public grand opening of the new store is set for Friday, March 30, 2012 at 8:00AM, however, there are some pre-opening celebration events scheduled as well:
